    What Is Calcium Propionate?

Calcium propionate is a new type of food additive, approved by the World Health Organization (WHO) and the Food and Agriculture Organization of the United Nations (FAO) as a safe and reliable anti-mold agent for food and feed.

Calcium propionate is an acid-type food preservative. Under acidic conditions, it produces free propionic acid, which has antibacterial effects. Its antibacterial effect is influenced by environmental pH, with the best mold inhibition at pH 5.0; at pH 6.0, the antibacterial ability significantly decreases, and the minimum inhibitory concentration is 0.01%. In acidic media (such as starch, protein, and oil-containing substances), it strongly inhibits various molds, Gram-negative bacteria, or aerobic spore-forming bacteria, and can even inhibit the production of aflatoxin, all while being harmless to yeast and humans, with no toxic side effects. It is a new, safe, and efficient anti-mold agent for use in food, brewing, feed, and herbal medicine formulations.

Applications and Uses of Calcium Propionate

As an anti-mold agent for feed, calcium propionate is mainly used in feed. When used as a feed preservative, calcium propionate is relatively stable. In foods, propionates are used not only in bread, cakes, and cheese but also in soy sauce to prevent mold and inhibit secondary fermentation. In medicine, propionates can be made into powders, solutions, and ointments to treat diseases caused by parasitic molds on the skin. Ointments (solutions) contain 12.3% sodium propionate, and powders contain 15% calcium propionate.

Calcium Propionate Has Broad-Spectrum Antibacterial Effects Against Molds, Yeasts, And Bacteria.

Calcium propionate can be used as an anti-mold agent for food and feed and as a preservative for bread and cakes. Calcium propionate is easy to mix evenly with flour, and while acting as a preservative, it also provides essential calcium for the human body, enhancing food fortification.

Calcium propionate inhibits molds and aerobic spore-forming bacteria that can cause sticky substances in bread but has no inhibitory effect on yeast.

Effective against molds, aerobic spore-forming bacteria, Gram-negative bacteria, aflatoxins in starch, protein, and oil-containing substances, with unique anti-mold and anti-corrosion properties.

It is a new, safe, high-efficiency, and broad-spectrum anti-mold agent for food and feed applications in food, brewing, feed, and herbal medicine formulations.

Calcium propionate as a feed additive can effectively prevent feed mold, extend the shelf life of feed, and, when combined with other inorganic salts, can increase livestock appetite and improve milk production in dairy cows. Calcium propionate has low volatility, is heat-resistant, and has good adaptability for animals, making it suitable for various feeds.

A new type of feed additive, mainly used as an anti-mold agent, extending the shelf life of feed. It is highly effective against molds, aerobic spore-forming bacteria, and Gram-negative bacteria, can inhibit the production of aflatoxin, is harmless to yeast, humans, and livestock, and has no toxic side effects. It can also be used as a food preservative.

Calcium propionate is a new food additive that has been developed and is being applied in China in recent years. Calcium propionate as a non-toxic food and feed preservative can extend the shelf life of food and feed, has good preservative effects, is non-toxic, safe, and can replace slightly toxic sodium benzoate and potassium sorbate. Calcium propionate lacks the corrosiveness and irritancy of propionic acid, thus preventing damage to processing equipment and operators.
